Feb 09, 2007· Milling spindle speed for aluminum??? I'm planning to make the outer ring of a small swashplate which will look like the photo. After turning the diameters, it will be mounted on a spacer to drill holes and remove ring material not needed, ie. to lighten.
Depending on how much you are removing, I would say use a face mill for the majority of the material removal, then just take a single, fairly shallow pass with the fly cutter to get the finish you want. You could also do what another user suggested and just scotchbrite it after the face mill, if a brushed finish is acceptable to you.

Face milling, in general, is defined as the process of cutting surfaces that are perpendicular to the cutter axis, or the faces of a part. Shell mills and fly cutters are most often used for face milling, but depending on what kind of surface finish you're looking for, you could use an end mill as well. End Mills
A shell mill is any of various milling cutters (typically a face mill or endmill) whose construction takes a modular form, with the shank (arbor) made separately from the body of the cutter, which is called a "shell" and attaches to the shank/arbor via any of several standardized joining methods.
